(Bed & Breakfast)
The Carriage Inn
417 East Washington St.
Charles Town, WV 25414

The Carriage Inn was built circa 1840. Thomas and Mary Rutherford were the owners of the house during the Civil War. Among the Southern Generals who were guests in this home were J.E.B. Stuart, Turner Ashby, Stonewall Jackson and Robert E. Lee. A meeting between General Ulysses S. Grant and General Philip Sheridan was held in the house on September 17, 1864. General Sheridan used the home as his Headquarters on numerous occasions during the Civil War. The Rutherford’s and their heirs owned the house until 1888, when George and Emily Washington became the owners. YES, George Washington slept here!!! The Washington’s, who planted the Copper Beech trees in the front lawn, and installed the iron fence, were residents until 1902. George Washington was the mayor of Charles Town.

HistoricStay.com Has Launched!

HistoricStay.com is a human-curated, invitation only

presentation of select historic lodging accommodations,

including bed & breakfasts, inns, hotels and lodges worldwide.

Historic lodging facilities (Stays) are demonstrably

significant to world history with respect to their architecture,

engineering, archeology or culture, as well as their location,

design, materials, workmanship, feeling or association.

Historic bed & breakfasts, inns, hotels and lodges offer

travelers a truly unique and memorable lodging experience.

They provide visitors a genuine opportunity to

connect with the past, while enjoying restful lodging,

excellent cuisine, gracious hospitality and more.

Sadly, countless historically significant structures

have been (and continue to be) lost forever.

Many of those that endure, do so largely because of the

vision, passion and dedication of devoted and enterprising

proprietors, companies and others, who (usually after great effort

and expense) offer them as living, interactive lodging facilities

reflecting the rich historical fabric within which they are woven.
